Making Spaces for Play
A new report, Making Spaces for Play, written by ZCD Architects and NHBC foundation looks in more detail at our original research, which through observational methodology and new mapping techniques suggests certain design characteristics can have a significant effect on the social use of space.
The focus is on children's outdoor play, which is seen less and less these days in our local neighbourhoods. Designing for play, this report suggests, could hold the key to community life and social integration and at the same time give back children back their freedom to meet friends, play safely and move around independently.
These urban design principles have been developed by ZCD Architects and are being tested on other schemes across the country. We use them to inform our designs and to test emerging masterplans and other completed schemes.
