The Lord Napier
Retrofit and extension to landmark public house

Nestled at the core of Hackney Wick, adjacent to the train station, the Lord Napier Pub reopened in 2020 after an extensive rebuild and refurbishment led by ZCD Architects. As the sole surviving pub in the area, its historic roots trace back to the late 19th century when it catered to the bustling community of factory workers.

Our engagement with the project commenced in 2011 when Cordula and Stewart envisioned its redevelopment. Instead of demolishing, Cordula decided redefine the brief, designing a new pub that would serve the community while preserving its social and physical essence.
This incarnation was conceived in the spirit of the 2016 48-hour 'takeover,' where local artist Aida Wilde proposed adorning the building with street art. Returning original artists collaborated on the current rendition.
Our interventions were simple; we elevated the roof of the publican's house, establishing a space for community gatherings. Additionally, we introduced two new staircases leading to an expansive roof terrace that overlooks Hackney Wick, anchoring the pub within its local context.

By augmenting rather than dismantling the existing structure and materials, we fashioned a building with a minimal carbon footprint, now fully insulated for energy efficiency.

The pub stands as a cherished local social hub, embraced by the community upon reopening and bustling with activity. The preservation of the Lord Napier not only retains a piece of Hackney Wick's heritage but also provides a haven of light and views amidst the urban landscape.
