This competition explored many of the themes that ZCD Architects are interested in, and have developed since, such as intergenerational living, play, shared space, and community.

The brief was to explore how homes could be adapted to suit different stages in a family’s life. Our entry uses a repeating home type as a base, starting with a two storey, two-bedroom home in Type A and increasing to over three storeys with the larger Type B and then Type C. The final iteration is Type D, where the home is subdivided to create a separate flat on the ground floor, over a two storey maisonette, to cater for changes in later life.

The relationship between the home and the external spaces is also critical and indeed this idea and others can be seen in our Sidney Close scheme such as the car ports, courtyards, and the clear connections between all the homes and the rear shared gardens.
